What is digital templating and why is it better than paper templates?

Digital templating uses a laser or photogrammetry device to capture cabinet dimensions as a digital file, which is sent directly to the CNC machine for cutting. Paper templates are traced by hand and introduce human measurement error. Digital templates are more accurate and eliminate the need to bring a physical cardboard template back to the shop.

Do my cabinets need to be completely finished before templating?

The cabinet boxes need to be fully installed and level before templating. Cabinet doors can be removed or left in place. Upper cabinets should also be installed if they affect backsplash height. Flooring does not need to be finished before templating in most cases, but confirm with your fabricator.

Can I make changes after the template is taken?

Minor adjustments are sometimes possible before the file is sent to the CNC machine, but any change after cutting begins is not. The best time to catch errors is during the template review, before you give approval to proceed with fabrication. Review the template carefully with the fabricator before signing off.

Where does the fabricator mark sink and faucet cutout locations during templating?

The fabricator marks the center point of the sink opening and faucet hole locations on the cabinets or countertop surface during the templating visit, based on your sink model specifications. If you haven't selected a sink yet, have the dimensions and mounting specifications ready before the templating appointment so the cutout is sized correctly.

What should I have ready before the templating appointment?

Have your sink selected (or at minimum, the specifications sheet), your edge profile choice made, and your seam placement preferences discussed with the fabricator in advance. If you have any design drawings or dimensions from a kitchen designer, share those with the fabricator before they arrive. The more information the fabricator has going in, the more productive the templating visit will be.
